So, back about a year or so ago, when we found out that Darren had a girlfriend, I saw some pictures, thought she was hot as hell, and then I read her bio.
Mia Swier is an Associate Producer at Showtime Networks and a freelance filmmaker. While attending New York University’s Steinhardt School for Media Studies and Television production, she worked at various networks including ABC, NBC and USA Network. She also worked for several years at White Cherry Entertainment in production for several national, live televised events.
Mia has worked for television programs including Saturday Night Live, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, The Tony Awards, The Daytime Emmy Awards, The Superbowl, The Thanksgiving Day Parade, The NFL Kickoff,The Tony Danza Show, Nashville Star and One Life to Live, Mia has also produced and directed a series of her own short films. Notable credits include co-written and self-directed film “A (Not So) Civil Union,” a short mockumentary about the first legalized lesbian wedding which has screened at multiple festivals, and Somewhere Between, a German/English short psycho-thriller she produced with director Finn Pfeffer. Mia has also volunteered at The Tribeca Film Festival. She is the bassist and one of two lead-vocalists in the alt-punk garage rock band Shoot the Freak.
And I think that was the quickest two-thumbs-up approval I’ve ever given.
A lot of people have reservations about her personal style. I think it’s really important to stress that I think a lot of the fishnets, a lot of the crazy outfits, are part of a stage presence. It’s the way she wants to express herself as an artist. When she is rocking the bass and she has a band with her onstage, she has a persona, and that persona is Mia Von Glitz. I think it’s also important to stress how much confidence she has to have in order to do what she does, and I respect the hell out of that. I see it as her saying, “I don’t give a fuck what you think about propriety,” I see it as “I am unashamed of my body,” I see it as “You wish you could be this self-empowered.”
If you look at her and see “what a slut,” then you have internalized misogyny and you need to check yourself. Judge her actions, not her appearance.
I think Darren looks at her and sees someone who is strong, accomplished, talented, hardworking, and sexy as all fuck—I think she can keep up with him, that they challenge each other and that their creative minds are different enough to work. I think I would much rather he be with someone who’s been with him for years and who is obviously awesome than have to hear about he-said she-said rumors. I think she helps him stay grounded just as much as StarKid does.
I was one of the first people to write Darren/Chris, and although what I’ve written is unrequited, angsty friendship fic, one of my favorite things about Darren is that he can be everything that he is and also be straight. Darren is an enigma, he’s such a weird exception to everything you ever thought you knew about gender and sexuality and the entertainment industry, and while I understand the oh my god there’s a photo of them touching because I do it too, I am happy that Chris and Darren are comfortable with each other regardless of their sexuality. I am glad that now, the ‘verse I wrote a year and a half ago is an AU.
And if you just hate Mia because she’s dating Darren and he loves her and not you, then I think you need to get a life. I believe that loving someone means that you want them to be happy. I love Darren, and I believe that Mia makes him happy. I don’t understand how a lot of girls can’t separate themselves from that emotionally and decide it’s okay to hate.
I think Mia has assloads of raw power and you should fucking respect.
Happy 22nd Birthday Chris Colfer, you flawless human being
